My name's Kamsani.

I studied communications and media at UWA but now I'm an artist by trade. 

Always was creative, I didn't think I could make a career out of it.

I had studied architecture first, cause I always thought that everyone needed a house to live and not everyone needed a painting.

One of the most beneficial things I took away from, I guess, studying at UWA was the connections I made. I did a lot of drawing and scribbling in my notebooks,

so a few of my friends had noticed that and then having left UWA a few people reached out to me, like, private commission sort of got me off the ground at first.

My artwork is just a reflection of myself; I come from a diverse background, obviously very proud of my indigenous heritage.

Seeking wisdom to me, just from my perspective, it's knowing that you don't have all the answers and the world changes and information changes so just change with it, I guess.

Kam works as an illustrator, designer, and artist for private, commercial and government clients.  He uses his artwork as a platform to share knowledge about Aboriginal culture.

In 2018, Kam was named as WA’s Young Person of the Year.

01:30pm – 21 FEBURARY 2020, Dr. Laura Johnston, MEDICAL PRACTICITIONER, UWA GRADUATE

My name's Laura Johnston.

I'm a UWA Graduate and I'm now a doctor at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.

I had no idea what I wanted to do when I was younger. I really only figured it out later in life.

After high school I was working as a pharmacy assistant and I ended up doing a few temp jobs after that for other medical specialists and sort of, my interest just sort of kept building.

And so, at that point I decided; well, actually, maybe I should sort of go to uni and pursue this.

I really couldn’t be more sincere in saying that if you're interested in medicine, and that's what you want to do, like, you should go for it.

I don't know about, sort of, coming up to the world's big challenges, but I do know that on a smaller level that I can make a positive impact in what I'm doing.

One hour after shooting, Sir Charles Gairdner ED received Western Australia’s first COVID-19 case.  A virus being worked on by medical professionals around the world.

My name is Tannielle McHugh.

I am studying psychology here at UWA. I grew up in Ardyaloon community, also know as One Arm Point, just north of Broome, WA.

Growing up I was very shy and reserved.

I didn't like talking to people I didn't know and during high school I was introduced to acting and I loved it.

Finding performing arts was a way to help me to speak out more so I want to use the same method, using art and psychology at the same time, to help children, young people, adults to break out of the shell the same way I did.

I want to go back to urban and remote communities and run workshops with children, high school kids, even adults, just 'cause I do want a lot of the indigenous communities to be able to go out there, chase their dream like I did.

I went out there and I'm doing all of this stuff now and it's really exciting. And it just want everyone to see that it is possible.

At the time of filming, the Government’s 12^th Closing the Gap report confirmed that the mental health of young indig3enous Australians was one of the most significant concerns the nation faces.

My name’s Grace Scullett-Dean. I’m doing a PHD at UWA in Environmental Science.

I followed my supervisor Talitha Santini over here. I was really attracted to her research, and so I chose to follow her over to Perth to start my PHD at UWA.

What’s most exciting to me about soil is that we’re in the middle of a soil crisis.

We’re depleting soils globally far quicker than we produce them naturally.

In this trial we are having a look at how we can transform bauxite residue – which is a by-product of aluminium production – into a productive soil.

We’re combing a range of different amendments to try and transform this material, so we’re testing out these blends right here.

Bauxite residue is highly alkaline and saline, so we are trying to reduce the salinity and alkalinity using different waste amendments.

This project is directly connected with industry, because it’s fully funded by South 32 –

an aluminium company.

Working with industry is great for us, because it gives us an opportunity to translate our fundamental research into real world impact.

Western Australia is a major global producer of bauxite and alumina, so this research is of direct relevance to the Western Australian economy.

I would definitely say that Environmental Science is a very exciting field to work in.

Studying here at UWA, being surrounded by highly motivated people

UWA School of Agriculture and Environment is working closely with industry partners as part of their ongoing rehabilitation of mine sites, tailings, and soils impacted by mining activities.

In collaboration with industry partners, UWA hopes to improve environmental management in the minerals industry and establish Australia as a world leader in tailings management.
