The NGCF conducts research associated with centrifuge modelling of offshore and onshore geotechnical structures and the characterisation of soils. It services the needs of industry and academic partners across the globe.
The NGCF is the largest centrifuge modelling centre in the world. It unites experts across a wide range of disciplines, from geotechnical research on a wide range of soil-structure interaction and soil behaviour issues, to ocean engineering and the design of pipelines, anchors and other offshore infrastructures.

Professor Christophe Gaudin completed his Masters with honours in Civil Engineering at Ecole Centrale de Nantes, France, in 1999.
The NGCF currently operates the only geotechnical centrifuge facility in Australia and runs an impressive three geotechnical centrifuges: a 3.6m diameter fixed beam centrifuge, a new 10m diameter centrifuge, and a 1.2m drum centrifuge. These centrifuges spin 24/7 around 270 days of the year, working to provide answers to challenging geotechnical engineering problems facing the offshore energy industries.

The 3.6m diameter beam centrifuge was manufactured by Actidyn in France and commissioned in 1989.
10m beam centrifuge
The Actidyn C72 beam centrifuge is a large 10m diameter beam centrifuge commissioned in 2016.
1.2 drum centrifuge
The 1.2m diameter Broadbent drum centrifuge was commissioned in 1997.
Research activities at the NGCF are supported by a team of academics, engineers and technicians, who can provide expert advice, develop innovative solutions and collect high-quality data for a wide range of geotechnical problems.
The NGCF provides consulting services associated with centrifuge and single gravity modelling to industry clients worldwide. These services range from generating performance data to inform the design of geotechnical structures, to investigating fundamental research problems for individual partners, or within joint industry projects.
Technical support and sales
The NGCF provides technical support and equipment sales to other research laboratories worldwide, as well as sales to industry clients, through the development and implementation of data acquisition and motion control systems, soil characterisation tools and image analysis techniques.
